THE NIGHT THE WORLD ENDED
John Facenda, the fiftyish local news anchor, pressed his lips together in a thin line, stretching them into an automatic smile when he realized the camera was on him. “We, uh,” he said, and I heard Mom let out a little gasp at that tiny verbal stumble—worse, in its way, than President Kennedy gulping his water. “We seem to have lost contact with CBS News headquarters. Our technicians are working to restore service as soon as possible. In the meantime, our news team here at WCAU-TV will keep broadcasting.” A sheet of paper trembled ever so slightly in his hand. “I have here a set of Civil Defense instruc—” The TV set let out an ear-shattering screech as a blinding white light came through the rear windows of the house. The ones that faced north, toward Philadelphia.
